The Fugees (CD2, Tk10)
Killing Me Softly (With His Song) (released in 1996) music and lyrics by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel Wyclef Jean, leader, rapper, and producer; Lauryn Hill, rapper/singer; Pras Michel, rapper.

This group was together from 1994 to 1997. To call them a rap group or just a hip-hop group ignores the blend of other influences in their music. They are primarily a hip-hop group, but they incorporated elements of soul, R&B, and
reggae. This group is a great representation of rap moving back into the pop mainstream. The production quality and musical arrangement show maturity and finesse. The vocals and rapping demonstrate the heritage of call and response in the blues tradition. This recording is a typical studio event; for example, the backup vocals as well as some of the lead parts could be sung by Lauryn Hill, which would not be possible in a live performance. Also the bass and drum sounds are all electronically generated. Wyclef Jean is the leader/producer, which means he is responsible for the beat and the backup tracks. This band of three has no traditional instrumentalists.

This selection is a remix of Roberta Flacks song of the same title. A remix uses the original tracks of a song as the basis for their new performance. You will hear samples of the original track below the singing and beats created by
the Fugees.
